Lingualeo

LinguaLeo ("lingua" is Latin for "language," and Leo is a game character) is an educational web platform for people who want to learn and practice English. According to their own statistics, by December 30, 2013, there were 6,760,581 registered users, mostly from Russia and the CIS. The platform is virtually identical to LingQ, a Canadian project that was launched a few years earlier. However, Aynur Abdulnasyrov, the Russian startup's founder, has stated that his company was conceived independently, and he only found out about the Canadian version three months after his company was up and running. The platform centers around the "seven secrets of mastering foreign languages," which are: "motivation and attraction, grasp of authentic, modern language, modeling and reproducing language patterns, communicating with others, optimal frequency, regularity, practicality, and efficiency." Users can select and explore interesting texts, make a note of new words with their translations, sit training modules, and take part in language quests. The project is structured like a computer game built around a character called Leo the Lion. On June 14, 2012, LinguaLeo announced that Russian Runa Capital venture had invested $3,000,000 in the company.

4shared.com

Millions of users around the world use http://www.4shared.com/ to store and share files. It is among the top 100 most visited websites in the world. The website became even more popular after being localized into 12 European and Asian languages. AWATERA was tasked with providing high-quality localization into the main European and Asian languages and quickly translating updates into all the working languages. The multilingual localization of such a complex website required the participation of highly qualified IT specialists and professional native-speaking translators as well as the extensive use of cutting-edge linguistic and information technologies. The work was carried out in several stages: we translated the entire content into 12 languages (Malay, Thai, Indonesian, Arabic, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Spanish, Turkish, Portuguese, French, and Polish) and localized all the service elements hidden from users (headers, metatags, etc.). To ensure consistent style and terminology, we used Translation Memory and glossaries agreed upon with the customer for each language. Then, we performed linguistic and functional testing to ensure all the texts were displayed correctly.
